Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a shell or thin layer of tooth-colored porcelain that fit over the front surface of teeth to fix worn down enamel, uneven spacing, discoloring, chips or cracks.
Since veneers improve and align smiles they are considered part of cosmetic dentistry, but are also a form of teeth protection to prevent more extensive treatment.

- Less intensive than a crown, yet stronger and more aesthetically pleasing.
Risks
As with any dental procedure, there are potential risks involved with veneers that patients should know before they decide if veneers are right for them.
- Veneers are irreversible.
- Teeth may become slightly sensitive for a week or so after the procedure.
- May need to be replaced at some point.
- Teeth are not immune from cavities so continue to maintain dental hygiene, and visit the dentist every six months for routine cleaning and exams.
Procedure
A veneer usually takes three dental visits in our San Antonio office.
- At the first appointment, the dentist examines teeth to see if a veneer is necessary.
- During the next visit, a local anesthetic is given for the patient’s comfort. The problem tooth is reshaped with a cutting device. An impression of the tooth is made and sent to a dental lab.
- At the last visit, the veneer is cemented on the tooth and shaped to conform to it. A special light beam is applied to trigger chemicals in the cement to quickly harden. Then excess cement is removed, and it is polished.
